British HGV drivers please read! The Association of British Drivers and the Road Haulage Association have been getting reports recently that HGV's are being prosecuted by speed cameras for exceeding the archaic 40mph limit on single carriageway roads where the speed limit for cars is 50 or 60. The Department of Transport has told the RHA that it doesn't happen, but they, and we, believe that it does. So, we need your help. If you, or any other driver you know, has been done
- in an HGV
- on a single-carriageway road where the limit for cars is 50 or 60
- doing between 40 and 50 (we're particularly interested if it was 46 or below)
- by a camera (not by a real policeman)
we want to hear from you! Please email hgv40@cybertrucker.co.uk with details and we'll get back to you.

Several of the reports we've received concern the A556 near Chester. It may have four lanes, but some of it isn't a dual carriageway, it's a single carriageway, so the limit for HGV's is 40, not 50. A camera down there has been reaping a rich harvest of lorry drivers doing 50. Don't get caught - and if you do, tell us!

About this site

This site has been constructed to spread the word about the dangers caused by the speed limiters which are being fitted to our vehicles. Here you'll find out how speed limiters work, what they do, and the effect they have on drivers. You'll also see why the number of lorry drivers killed in road accidents has increased by 24% since they were fitted.

Car drivers take note! You might be thinking"This doesn't affect me because I don't drive a lorry", but they're going to fit them to cars. The European Union passed legislation in early 1997 which would allow them to limit the top speed of cars. All they're waiting for is the right time to do it. Many new cars are already fitted with limiters, (the Audi A80 and Jaguar XK8 among them), but the limiters are set to something silly like 180 mph. (If you've got a cruise control you can almost guarantee you've also got a limiter because the same machinery does both jobs.) As soon as the law is passed requiring cars to be limited, it's just a matter of taking the car into your local dealer for him to reset the limiter, and that's it. Your car will never go above the set speed ever again. "Well", you're thinking, "If they set them to 75 or 80 mph it wouldn't be too bad". Think again! Guess what speed they want to set them to? 62mph (100 km/h). That's right, sixty two miles per hour. Once your limiter's set you'll never go over 62mph again. Ever.

Most of this website consists of copies of articles, written by me, which have appeared in various British magazines in the last few years on the subject of speed limiters. I speak from personal experience, because I've been a professional lorry driver for about 15 years, mostly on articulated vehicles, and in the last three or four years I've driven over 150,000 miles in lorries fitted with speed limiters. I'm absolutely convinced that they cause danger. This belief has been borne out by the sudden increase in the number of lorry drivers killed as soon as limiters became compulsory in Britain.

Unfortunately Britain is currently run by Bureaucrats from the European Union, who won't let a little thing like the deaths of a few drivers deter them from their dream of controlling everything we do. They, and the collaborators within the British political parties and Civil Service, plan to fit limiters to cars as well, set to 62mph (100km/h). They're obsessed with speed, as if that's the only thing which causes road accidents. Bad driving causes accidents, but to understand what bad driving is you have to have a deep understanding of the complex business of driving. They don't have that understanding, so they concentrate on speed. Speed is the only thing about driving you can actually quantify, and bureaucrats like numbers. They don't understand driving, but they can understand numbers. Couple this with a desire to force us all out of our cars by making driving as unpleasant as possible, and you can see why they want to fit speed limiters to everything, and put so-called "traffic calming" everywhere, which again causes accidents and annoys drivers and local residents, usually to no good purpose.

Because of the nature of the information, this site is mostly text. Alternatively, highlight the text (Edit then Select All, or drag the mouse pointer over the text you require), Copy the text to your Clipboard then Paste it into a word processor document.

Provided that you're not going to use it for purposes of which I disapprove I won't normally object, but I'd like to know where it's going! Some stuff on this site I've "borrowed" from elsewhere. I think I've credited the various copyright owners, and I don't think any of the borrowed material is being used in ways contrary to the owner's interests, but if anyone has a problem with me using their stuff please email me and I'll take it off.
